Talk To Us: Samaritans' National Awareness Month
Samaritans have launched ‘Talk to Us’, their National Awareness Campaign. This July, the charity is asking people to give their time for 60 seconds, creating the UK’s largest conversation. Talk to Us spans the whole of July and Samaritans’ branches up and down the country will be popping up in local towns and cities to let people know that they are there, round the clock and that they provide a safe space for them to talk and be themselves.
Samaritans are members of Helplines Partnership. Their helpline is available 24 hours a day to provide confidential emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress, despair or suicidal thoughts. Indeed Samaritans’' was the world’s first 24-hour telephone helpline which grew from “one man in one room with one phone” 60 years ago to a service delivered today by 21,200 volunteers from 201 branches in the UK and in Ireland. In 2013, the charity responded to 5.23 million calls for help, the highest number for five years. There was also an increase in the numbers of calls for help received by email and SMS message.
Throughout the month of July Samaritans are running several social media campaigns encouraging support of the work they do. People up and down the country can get involved by simply texting ‘SUPPORT’ to 70080* to make a £4 donation which is the cost to the charity of answering one call for help.
